In 1923 Louis de Broglie realized that “an observer for whom a portion of matter is in steady motion […] will constantly see the internal periodical phenomenon in phase with a wave” . The concept of matter-waves was born. Three years later it was cast into the Schrödinger equation, which has become the best non-relativistic description of nature, even today.
The quantum wave nature of matter has been demonstrated with electrons, neutrons, atoms, small molecules, and even antimatter. It has been extended towards higher complexity and macroscopicity: from large electron ensembles in superconductors, over quantum degenerate ultra-cold atoms in Bose Einstein condensates, to complex (bio) molecules, clusters and nanoparticles.
Matter-wave research contributes to atomic physics, quantum optics, quantum sensing and quantum simulation, precision metrology, condensed matter research. Matter-wave applications range from precision measurements of fundamental constants. atomic and molecular properties, over accelerometry for inertial navigation and geodesy to tests of general relativity theory.
This portal aims to connect all matter-wave research groups around the globe, to facilitate exchange and joint research.
